Designs: Episode 1

Week One: January 1, 2007

Top Design - Design Challenges

The winning room: Goil & Elizabeth

What the judges said:
Kelly Wearstler thought the the floor-sandbox was exceptional and all judges agreed that the two designers pushed the envelope of creativity. Margaret Russell was concerned about where one would sit in a room like this, but Alexis assured her that the swing was was indeed comfortable. Jonathan Adler liked that it captured Alexis' personality.

Top Design - Design Challenges

The losing room: Heather & Lisa

What the judges said:
Margaret said that she couldn't see a room like this getting published in Elle Decor. The judges were unimpressed that Lisa and Heather were $10,000 under budget. Margaret Russel and Kelly Wearstler both felt as though the theme was too close to that of a Chinese restaurant. All Top Design judges agreed that this did not represent Alexis' personality at all.

Top Design - Design Challenges

Felicia & Matt

What the judges said:
Jonathan Adler liked that the room was chic and pushed outside of the box, but felt there was no reflection of Alexis in the decor. Kelly Wearstler adored that Felicia and Matt played with the architecture in the room and created a niche wall.
Top Design - Design Challenges

Andrea & Ryan

What the judges said:
The judges agreed that Andrea and Ryan took the design challenge too literally. Kelly Wearstler liked that they painted both the floors and the walls, and felt that Andrea and Ryan had a good understanding of how to work Top Design challenges. However, Margaret felt as though it resembled a sophisticated dorm room.
Top Design - Design Challenges

John & Michael

What the judges said:
Yes, the Michael and John room, or as the judges discovered, the John & John room because Michael refused to get dirty. Jonathan liked that the room created a narrative, which no other team had attempted. Margaret Russell asked if the room was designed for a man, and felt that the room had nothing to do with the client. Michael was warned by Jonathan to roll up his sleeves and learn how to paint.

Top Design - Design Challenges

Carisa & Erik

What the judges said:
Jonathan Adler felt as though the room was playful and young, but that it needed a "huge dose of zoloft." Margaret thought the room was tasteful but nothing special. The judges felt that there wasn't enough attention to detail, such as the absence of accessories on the table, and that there were too many pillows in the room.
