Designs: Episode 2This is a featured page

Week Two: February 7, 2007

Episode 2 - Erik
Winner - Erik

What the judges said:
Margaret said that she was surprised by what Erik came up with, but that she loved it. She commented that he was very creative, and joked that she hoped that the kid really likes pirates, and it wasn't just a comment he made offhand. Kelly felt that the room was a little overboard and that at some point, a designer has to "pull back." But, overall, it was the biggest success and totally fit the 'client.'

Episode 2 - John
Voted Off - John

What the judges said:
Oh. My. God. The judges were mostly confused, and then angry. Jonathan wanted to know what was up with the floor (because there is none.) Kelly mentioned that the side tables were way too far away from the bed, and alluded that she knew he had planned for a queen sized bed before knowing that his client was a child (most of the designers made this mistake.) The guest judge, Liz Lange, said it was "horribly done." After John gave one reason after another why his room was not finished, Jonathan Adler told the judges that John is "the mayor of excuses village."

Episode 2 - Andrea
Andrea

What the judges said:
The judges thought the room was too old for the girl. Margaret mentioned that she loves the chairs, but that they are not comfortable for a bedroom. The judges were most taken with the Murphy bed, which is what saved Andrea from getting grilled too hard. They did mention that there wasn't enough "glitter." One might look at the room and ask if Andrea knows any children, or remembers her childhood at all?

Episode 2 - Carisa
Carisa

What the judges said:
Kelly said that she loved the walls and the jungle theme. Margaret mentioned that she was worried about a child swinging from the ropes with all the hard edges in the room. Liz Lange said that this room was one of her favorite, and Jonathan concurred, saying that Carisa solved the problem by making the room creative, confident and functional.

Episode 2 - Elizabeth
Elizabeth

What the judges said:
All the judges thought that there was too much of a soccer theme in this room. The 'client' was confused as to why there were buckets in his table, and Elizabeth responded with "that's where he'll put the things that he collects from around the world." Of course. A big fat thumbs down from the judges.

Episode 2 - Felicia
Felicia

What the judges said:
Margaret liked that there is a bicycle painted on the wall, but felt that the room is older looking for a child. Here here. Kelly thought there were too many things going on, and Jonathan thought that it looked too much like a hotel room. However, all of the judges agreed that turning the bed sideways did fix the problem of the bedside tables being too far away from the bed (a problem with many of the rooms.)

Episode 2 - Goil
Goil

What the judges said:
Goil's answer to having a younger client? Put everything on wheels. The judges liked it, but said that Goil needed to pay more attention to the client, and that there is too much stuff on the floor. Jonathan thought it was architecturally innovative and captured the client to a "T." Kelly didn't like the hiding space in the wall because, well, how can someone hide when there's no door.

Episode 2 - Matt
Matt

What the judges said:
Matt tried to use a lot of glam Hollywood pieces in his design. Liz thought that the room had a level of too much sophistication and was too black. Kelly liked the use of the lights and Margaret agreed that there was too much black, but loved the kid glamour.

Episode 2 - Michael
Michael

What the judges said:
The first of many mistakes is that Michael put a pillow in the room with the words "Home Sweet Home." Kelly responded by saying that she felt that she had walked into an assisted living facility. She added that it could have been designed by a state designer. Jonathan said it was a sad room that looks like someone died. Margaret said "Granny, granny, granny, granny." You get the point.

Episode 2 - Ryan
Ryan
What the judges said:
Kelly said that the room was "cat heavy," with the scratching post, the upper cat-walk, and all the other kitty paraphernalia in the room. Jonathan warned Ryan that his artist mentality was not going to work in the design world. Kelly mentioned that the girl couldn't get out of bed without hurting herself.
