Designs: Episode 4

Top Design - Carisa

Although the judges seemed to hate pillows in previous episodes, they liked Carisa's arrangement. Kelly Wearstler said that Carisa shopped well at the garage sales, and Jonathan Adler said that Carisa had well-balanced colors. Plus, Carisa creatively sewed napkins into pillow cases. Margaret Russell went so far as to say that the room was "really, really well done." Their only contention was that the client had wanted more room for storage.

Sent Home - Felicia
Felicia's client was disappointed by the room's design. The client said, "If I had to walk into this room, I'd shoot myself." Margaret Russel's one positive comment was that she liked the wallpaper. Johnathan Adler gave Felicia the boot, saying that the room was disjointed and depressing.

Andrea's Room

The judges weren't especially impressed or non-impressed by this room. Once again, Andrea flew under the radar by going middle of the road. They stated that the room was industrial, but that this was no surprise coming from Andrea.

Goil's Room

The judges, as usual, loved Goil's room. Their biggest contention was the bed; Margaret Russell said she didn't know how someone would get in and out of the bed without bruising their shins. He impressed them with his two-legged chair, and once again, inventive Goil was adored for it.

Matt's Room

The judges liked the two lamps/one lampshade idea, and the client loved the room. Margaret asked why Matt painted the rooms that color of green, and stated that "it's like the swatch book falls open to the color every week." The judges did adore the accessories, and went easy on Matt this week.

Michael's Room

Michael was striving for a bright, happy room, and the judges disagreed. Then, Michael disagreed with the judges. This is the fourth week in a row that Michael has said to the judges "actually, I disagree with you," during their critique. That aside, Jonathan Adler was horrified by the colors of grape and banana, but that Michael is improving overall.

Ryan's Room

Yikes. Kelly Wearstler started by saying it was a lot to take in, but that overall, it had a point of view, which is more than other contestants had. Jonathan Adler delivered the message that the client felt that she was sleeping behind bars. All the judges had a discussion about Ryan's attitude, and his open display of distaste for designer tools like swatches. Margaret Russell went so far as to ask Ryan if he wants to be a designer. Not a good thing when you're a contestant on a show called Top Design.

Erik's Room
Though the client did ask for art, the client was disappointed that Erik actually took that notion literally by painting huge paintings of the word "Art". Otherwise, the client said that it looked like "John Wayne Gacy art." Kelly Wearstler claimed that Erik understood the client, and agreed that the art was bizarre. Jonathan Adler stated that he wants Erik's taste to go up a bit.
